Kristi House

Kristi House is a 3-star hotel set in the heart of Chiang Mai's Old City, along Ratchadamnoen Road — the street that hosts the famous walking-street market every Sunday. Its location, rated an outstanding 9.3 by guests, leaves the historic gates, temples and museums of the old Lanna capital just a few minutes away on foot.

The property pairs simple, well-kept rooms with attentive service: a 24-hour front desk, a tour desk, an airport shuttle and bikes for hire to explore the centre. Every room is air-conditioned, with a private bathroom, flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi; some come with their own terrace.

The range of rooms is broad enough for couples and families alike, from 22 m² Superior rooms up to a spacious 110 m² two-bedroom suite, by way of family rooms with a bunk bed. Rounding out the stay are a shared kitchen, a picnic area and massage treatments on site.

The hotel's rooms

Kristi House offers six room types built for different needs, from Superior rooms with a king-size or twin layout that suit couples and pairs of friends, to family rooms with a bunk bed and a two-bedroom suite that works well for larger groups and families.

Every room shares the same essentials — air conditioning, a private bathroom with shower, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a fridge and free Wi-Fi — while the details shift from one room to the next: a terrace looking over the city, the more generous floor space of the Deluxe rooms, or step-free access for guests with reduced mobility. Sizes run from 22 m² in the Superior rooms to 110 m² in the Two-Bedroom Suite, so there is a fit whether you are a couple in town for a few days or a family after space and comfort for a longer stay.

Location and what to see

Kristi House sits on Ratchadamnoen Road, the main artery of Chiang Mai's Old City: a square roughly 1.6 km on each side, ringed by a moat and the remains of ancient walls, founded in 1296 by King Mangrai as the capital of the Lanna kingdom. It's one of the most convenient bases in town — guests rate the location 9.3 — because it puts most of the sights within walking distance.

About 330 metres away stands Tha Pae Gate, the eastern gate and the city's emblem. It's here, right along the hotel's own street, that the Sunday Walking Street comes to life every week: the big pedestrian market (roughly 5pm to 10:30pm) where you can browse handicrafts and textiles and graze on street food such as Khao Soi and Sai Ua sausage. A little further on are the Three Kings Monument and the City Arts & Cultural Centre, set in the former provincial hall.

The Old City holds more than thirty temples: a few minutes' walk away are Wat Chedi Luang, with its huge chedi partly toppled by the 1545 earthquake and its well-known "monk chats", and Wat Chiang Man, the city's oldest temple. To get around you need little more than your feet or a bicycle (the hotel hires them out), or you can flag down a songthaew, the shared red pick-up taxis.

The best time to visit is November to February, when the weather is cool and the skies are clear; November also brings the spectacular Yi Peng lantern festival. It's worth avoiding March and April, when intense heat and haze from agricultural burning — the so-called "burning season" — leave the air heavy. Chiang Mai International Airport is about 4 km away.
